COMMITTEE FOR COUNTY PROGRESS
TO HONOR CLEAVER AT ANNUAL MEETING

The Committee for County Progress has named Fifth District United States Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, II, the recipient of the CCP’s Second Annual Harry Wiggins Public Service Award.  CCP will present Congressman Cleaver with this award at its annual meeting on Wednesday, December 13, 2006 at the Twenty/20 Restaurant, 2020 Baltimore, in the heart of Kansas City’s Crossroads District.

CCP created this award in 2005 in honor of Missouri State Senator Harry Wiggins, who dedicated his life to promoting the public welfare as an assistant United States Attorney, state supervisor of the Department of Liquor Control, Western Judge of the Jackson County Court, General Counsel to the Missouri Public Service Commission, and, of course, as our Senator from the 10th District.  Last year’s recipient was former State Representative Marsha Campbell.

“Congressman Cleaver’s selfless work for the citizens of Jackson County as Pastor of St. James United Methodist Church, Kansas City Councilman, Mayor, and now Fifth District Congressman embodies Senator Wiggins’ unfailing commitment to public service,” said CCP President, Dale Youngs.  “We’re proud to name Congressman Cleaver as the recipient of this award in the Senator’s name.”

Founded in 1964, the Committee for County Progress was established to reform and restructure Jackson County government.  In furtherance of its mission to “Keep Reform Alive,” it recruits, screens and supports progressive Democratic candidates for office, and works to further the party’s commitment to promoting excellence in public service.  CCP is also a leader in hosting candidate debates, public forums on ballot and other issues, and in working to be a resource to progressive Democrats everywhere.

CCP OUT FRONT FOR KLUMB

A key Kansas City political club took a shot today at Mike Flaherty, one of the candidates for the 10th District state Senate seat.

The Committee for County Progress said Flaherty's stand against embryonic stem cell research makes him the wrong guy to hold a Senate seat that represents the Stowers Institute, 1000 E. 50th St.

The institute is pushing for a November constitutional amendment that would protect various forms of stem cell research. Flaherty said he backs adult stem-cell research, but not embryonic research. He said he would oppose the November amendment.

"I just don't think you can give scientists a blank check on that," he said. "In reality I feel like all of a sudden they figured out I'm going to win this, and that's the only area they feel they can attack me on."

CCP President Dale Youngs, though, said Flaherty's position makes him the wrong guy for the job.

"The 10th District...cannot afford to have a senator who is not 100 percent committed to responsible stem cell research," Youngs said.

Youngs reaffirmed the CCP's pick of former state Rep. Jason Klumb for the seat.

CCP ENDORSES MONTEE FOR STATE AUDITOR

The Committee for County Progress has endorsed Buchanan County Auditor Susan Montee in her race to become Missouri's next State Auditor.

"CCP believes Susan's unmatched experience in this race as a CPA, county auditor, and attorney will serve Missourians well as the state's next auditor," said Dale Youngs, CCP president. "We're proud to endorse her and look forward to working with her."

Founded in 1964, the Committee for County Progress was established to reform and restructure Jackson County government. In furtherance of its mission to "Keep Reform Alive," it recruits, screens, endorses and supports progressive Democratic candidates and issues, and works to further the party’s commitment to promoting excellence in public service. Sanders wins an early nod

Mike Sanders has received early backing from a venerable political club in his bid to become the next Jackson County executive.

The executive board of the Committee for County Progress, widely known as the CCP, has endorsed Sanders over state Sen. Charlie Wheeler. The full CCP membership will make a final endorsement call at a June 6 meeting.

The CCP board screened all four Democratic candidates for the post before picking Sanders, now the county prosecutor. The Wheeler-Sanders primary battle looms as one of the hottest races on the August primary ballot.

COMMITTEE FOR COUNTY PROGRESS
ENDORSES QUESTIONS 1 AND 2

The Committee for County Progress has endorsed Jackson County Questions 1 and 2, which will ensure that the Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals continue to play at the Truman Sports Complex for the next 25 years, and will create state-of-the art venues for all kinds of events at Arrowhead and Kauffman Stadiums, including the Super Bowl in 2015.

“The positive economic impact that the Chiefs and Royals have on Jackson County is indisputable,” said Dale Youngs, CCP President. “The teams also bring us together as a community, and the CCP believes that the passage of Questions 1 and 2 is critical to keeping them here.”

COMMITTEE FOR COUNTY PROGRESS WELCOMES IOWA GOVERNOR TOM VILSACK, HONORS FORMER STATE REPRESENTATIVE MARSHA CAMPBELL

The Committee for County Progress will welcome Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack to Kansas City at a fundraiser for CCP at the Cohen Gallery, 2020 Baltimore, on Friday, October 21. It will also present its first annual Harry Wiggins Public Service Award to former State Representative Marsha Campbell.

Elected in 1998, Governor Vilsack became Iowa's first Democratic governor in more than 30 years. He was re-elected in 2002. He has been recognized nationally for his commitment to improving education opportunities, children's health care coverage, and Iowa's economic growth. In addition to his leadership roles in the Democratic Governors' Association and National Governors' Association, Governor Vilsack recently began a his term as Chair of the Democratic Leadership Council.

Marsha Campbell served Jackson County's 39th District as a member of the Missouri House of Representatives from 1996 to 2004. She is a long-time member of CCP and the first recipient of the Harry Wiggins Public Service Award, an honor established by CCP in the name of 10th District Senator Harry Wiggins who served in the Missouri Senate for nearly 30 years.

"We're honored to have Governor Vilsack visit us," said CCP President Dale Youngs. "He's a role model for all of us who believe that Democrats' positive agenda for change can inspire Americans to unite again." Youngs also praised award recipient Marsha Campbell as "the embodiment of the phrase 'dedicated public servant,' a phrase that was the essence of Senator Wiggins' career and life. We're proud to name her the first recipient of this award given in his name."

McCaskill endorsed

A Kansas City political committee has given Claire McCaskill one of her first endorsements in the race for the U.S. Senate.

The Committee for County Progress, which traditionally backs Democrats, voted Monday night to support the former Jackson County prosecutor.

McCaskill is running against Republican incumbent Jim Talent.

"Claire is a former CCP member, has been a friend of CCP for years, and we wanted to be one of the first organizations to endorse her in her campaign to bring common sense and basic sanity back to Washington," said Dale Youngs, the group's president.

Club backs McCaskill for Missouri governor

By STEVE KRASKE The Kansas City Star

In a close vote, a Kansas City political club Thursday night endorsed Democrat Claire McCaskill over incumbent Bob Holden for Missouri governor.

The vote by the Committee for County Progress came about two weeks after the group's executive board had recommended on a 10-9 vote that Holden be endorsed, said club president Dave Kenner.

The vote was one of the first political club endorsements in the governor's race. Holden, elected in 2000, and McCaskill, the state auditor who once was a club member, are battling for the Democratic nomination in the August primary.

The winner is expected to face Republican Matt Blunt, the secretary of state.

Kennerwould not disclose the exact totals of Thursday night's vote, although he said about 80 of the group's 120 members cast ballots and the vote was close.

McCaskill, the former Jackson County prosecutor, attended the meeting and said afterward the endorsement is significant.

“It's unprecedented for an incumbent governor to lose an endorsement of this type,” she said. “It signals that electability is an issue.”

But Holden spokesman Roy Temple said the backing was predictable because of McCaskill's former standing as a member.
